Volunteering

Who can be a volunteer?

  • Volunteers should be friendly, outgoing, and enjoy working with people
  • Volunteers must be willing to commit to at least one full season of volunteering
  • Volunteers should have an interest in the work of the Clarice Smith Center
  • Volunteers must be 18 years of age or have the signed permission of a parent

What do volunteers do?

Volunteers work primarily as performance ushers serving as greeters, ticket-takers, seaters and coat check attendants. Volunteers arrive one hour before the performance start time. Volunteers may choose their own performances. Assignments for the entire season are given on a first-come first-served basis in the late summer.

What are the benefits of volunteering at the Clarice Smith Center?

While on duty volunteers are able to watch the performance for free. Seating is typically available but not guaranteed. Volunteers may elect to join the Senior Volunteer Service Corp at the University of Maryland (you do not have to be a senior to join.) The benefits of joining the SVSC include:

  • A University identity card
  • Staff discounts
  • A parking permit
  • An email account
  • Library card
  • Use of UM shuttle buses
  • Invitations to a recognition reception hosted by the university's president, and other events throughout the year
  • Tuition-free courses
(for MD residents age 60 or older under the University's Golden I.D. program)
  • Audit courses at no cost
(Those not eligible for tuition-free courses may receive the staff's assistance in arranging audit. This informal arrangement is at the discretion of the instructor)

How do I apply to volunteer?

Our volunteers are an integral part of our patron services team. If you have in interest in becoming a volunteer at the Clarice Smith Center please fill out the volunteer application and submit it to the Volunteer Coordinator. Please note that new volunteers are typically accepted at the beginning of each season and in between semesters only. If you file an application during the season it will be saved and considered at the appropriate time. Volunteers are accepted based on space availability which changes each semester.

*Students wishing to usher for extra credit should NOT fill out the application but should email the Volunteer Coordinator directly with their request.

For more information please contact Lynn Coughlin at 301-405-6841 or cscvolunteers@umd.edu.

Thank you for your interest in volunteering at the Clarice Smith Center!
